Spreadsheets

Home Page | Next

This page contains a number of spreadsheets that I have found useful. Some of them I have used routinely in day-to-day measurement situations. Others I created to create diagrams for the Second Edition of the book, and which I felt might be of interest to the gamma spectrometrist with an enquiring mind.

Files will be downloaded to your computer from where they can be run.

Statistics

  • chisquared.xls
Calculate chi-squared for a number of counts to check that the statistical variablility is satisfactory. Includes a chi-squared graph, on which the calculated chi-squared is plotted.

  • Weighted-Mean.xls
Calculate, and compare, simple and weighted means.

  • z-test-comparison.xls
Compare measured values against reference values to assess the concordance of the measured data. Useful for an initial check of your NPL Intercomparison results.

Decay

  • atomic-masses.xls
A complete list of atomic masses, together with the opportunity to calculate decay energies and assess the likelihood of decay by the different decay modes.

  • decay.xls
Plot single and composite decay curves - just for interest!

  • parent-daughter-decay.xls
Calculate the combined activity of a parent-daughter combination, together with the equilibrium activity ratio.

Calibration

  • FWHMMultifit.xls
Compare linear, quadratic, Debertin and Helmer and square-root quadratic fits to FWHM data. (See the inadequacies of the Canberra Genie equation.) The spreadsheet comes loaded with the pooled data from 27 varied calibrations.

  • random-summing-correction.xls
Using the two-source method, calculate the random summing correction factor for insertion into your spectrum analysis program.

  • Source-Detector-Distance.xls
Spreadsheet to relate measured count rates at different distances to derive the correction factors to correct counts rates to a reference value. It also derives the zero point of the detector.

NORM Analysis

  • NORM-consistency.xls
Paritions the 186 keV peak between 235U and 226Ra and corrects for certain spectral infererences and then checks all results for consistency. If there is disequilibrium, or to a limited extent non-natural uranium isotopic abundance, allows measurements to be combined in such a way as to take that into account.

Detector Characterization

  • detector-specification-check.xls
After measuring a 60Co spectrum under standard conditions, calculate compare resolution, peak-to-Compton and relative efficiency with the specification values.

  • Fit-Gaussian-to-Peak.xls
Take a real spectrum peak, put the channel contents into the spreadsheet and fit a Gaussian and, if necessary a continuum step.

  • MDA-Detector-comparison.xls
Compare two detectors in terms of resolution and relative efficiency. Get some feeling for the way in which altering these and other parameters alters the MDA - usually, not greatly!

System Throughput

  • coll-time-v-size.xls
Calculation of charge collection time as a function of detector size, in terms of relative efficiency.

  • throughput-calculations.xls
Calculation of system throughput as a function of shaping time and other related parameters according to the equations in Chapter 14. Examples of fitting the model to actual throughput data for analogue and digital systems are included.

Miscellaneous

  • voight-function.xls
A plot of the Voight Function compared to the Gaussian and Lorentzian functions. Just for interest.

  • TCS Estimation
Assess the degree of summing on your own detector. (Point source model only.)
